<itunes:summary>Fruit beverages and soda are out. Consumption of milk should be moderate, and drinking water is in, in, in. Between Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, and media coverage of childhood obesity -- parents are getting the message that H20 has health benefits second to none.  But what is the science behind the benefits of drinking water for children and adults alike?

Water makes up more than half of a human’s body weight. In a sense, water is a tool that helps our bodies accomplish critical tasks. For example, our blood has a lot of water in it. Blood carries oxygen to all the cells in our bodies. The more water we drink, the levels of oxygen in our bodies rise. This leads to greater circulation, which can help increase energy levels.

Drinking water prevents dehydration. This might sound obvious, but especially with summer upon us, kids should be drinking extra water to make up for fluid loss due to sweating. If kids are complaining of thirst, they’ve probably gone too long without water. Hydrated kids are happier kids.

Good digestion is aided by drinking water. The process of digestion involves breaking down food into smaller and smaller pieces. This process relies on fluid to liquefy and dissolve the food.

Water helps in the production of lymph. A body’s immune system uses lymph to transport nutrients to it’s tissues. The lymphatic system supports the immune system in removing and destroying waste, debris, dead blood cells, pathogens, and toxins from the body. If you’ve ever cut yourself, you might have noticed a clear fluid that seeps out of the wound. That’s likely lymph.

So, how much water should a person drink a day? It’s not an easy question to answer. Many variables need to be taken into consideration, such as age, weight, and intensity of daily exercise. In general, the current recommended daily amount is eight 8 oz glasses of fluid - that can come from water or water rich foods like fruits and vegetables.</itunes:summary>
